This tourist destination extending from Cape Codera its western end to nearly Boca Uchire in the State of Miranda. Caracas is preferred by many because of its proximity to the capital, its beaches, the possibility of water sports and many housing developments and holiday resorts. But the approach towards the sea, visitors often overlook its other attractions, such as Alfredo Jahn Cave Natural Monument, the National Park Lagoon Tacarigua, and old traditions, such as the celebration of San Juan Bautista and Cruz de Mayo.
Because of its fertile land and thanks to the level of rainfall in the era of colonization of Venezuela, was an ideal site for the cultivation of cocoa which the Spaniards brought from Mexico. With the tremendous popularity of the chocolate drink in Europe, large plantations were developed that led to the importation of slaves from Africa to work on and convert them to their owners, "large bigwigs" in rich exporters.
But if the base of the economy (replaced coffee as the most important product in the eighteenth century), due to events such as the War of Independence, which forced many owners to abandon their plantations, and the sharp fall in Cocoa prices in international markets by competition Cocoa Africa, followed by the development of oil, cocoa rose almost forgotten. Only in recent years, the high quality of our cocoa is developing in Venezuela over the map of the most popular producers at the international level.
In Barlovento, most of the old plantations were divided into small farms and do not have the advanced techniques for a good production. However, beside the main roads during harvest season, there is widespread in the cocoa shoulder of the road where it is dried in the sun and its sale is shared in the same places, with orchids, heliconia, and other products cambures premises.
The current economic situation of the rural Windward has nothing to do with the "big cocoas. Its wealth lies in the preservation of traditions, after centuries, the descendants of slaves brought from their homeland drums, dances, magic and superstition, which are an inseparable part of the charm of the area.
Starting the journey
For visitors from Caracas, access is via Guarenas-usual Caucagua, taking the latter to turn off Higuerote if the target is the western part of the area. Just before reaching Higuerote, is leaving for Curiepe west.
It is said that Curiepe was the first site where the Windward cultivation of cocoa, but his reputation now lies mainly in its lively festivals of San Juan Bautista. 
Since the'60s, when the group began actively Windward folk festivals to promote the influx of visitors is so abundant that 23 to June 25 is an event aimed at tourists, while the acts of devotion to the saint are held among the first residents in June and during a wake for San Juan Guaricongo weekend after the big party.
Birongo, further west of Curiepe also has a reputation, but rather than by the parties to their saints, is by its sorcerers and mystics. In fact, the town's name means black in the Bantu language.
Four miles west of Birongo found Alfredo Jahn Cave Natural Monument. Should only be explored with a local guide as it is very easy to get lost inside because of the many junctions. Equally important is if there ever visit possibility of rain. The underground river that passes through its caverns rises rapidly with the rain and creates a very dangerous situation.
Cave is the second largest country, has easy access and beautiful formations in its galleries and exhibitions. It has 15 entries and a horizontal development of 4292 meters.
Sun, sea and sand
Higuerote beaches stretching from the west of the city to Carenero. It is very popular, despite not having the beaches more attractive for the high concentration of garbage which is near the edge of the road and a very turbid sea due to the amount of sediment deposited because of the Tuy River which flows into the bay. Perhaps the best attraction for people who come there are abundant Guacuco set out to prepare consommés rich.
More popular still is to continue to move northward from Carenero Buche and Los Totumos up and walk through the channels between the islands of mangrove forests where many seabirds. It is a very crowded area to practice water skiing and diving in the crystal clear waters around the reefs.
Towards Carenero
This route offers two lodging options: Villa Golefa, a half block from the beach, has a huge building with 18 quarters very spacious (with AA, bath / cold water), swimming pool and a back channel that connects to the sea to dock own. If your goal is the Rio Chico-channel alternative is to continue on the road to the East where you can enjoy a beautiful tropical setting, with enormous trees decorated with vines and bromeliads, as well as benefit from the sale of orchids, cocoa and heliconia before making the turn at El Guapo to your destination.
The output for Tacarigua Lake National Park is just after Rio Chico. In the community of Bethlehem is the office of Inparques and the main dock from where boats leave for excursions into the lagoon and mangrove channels to observe flocks of birds such as large Corocoro red, brown and white herons, egrets palette alcatraz and many others. It is also a very popular place to fish lebranche, mullet, snook, tarpon and flounder, among others. Near the pier where there are several Caneyes sold lebranche tasty roast.
La Restinga Lagoon offers of 30 km of secluded beach. Is also the Club Miami (accessible by boat from the lagoon), which existed there prior to the area was declared a national park.
In the town of Laguna de Tacarigua, apart from its beach, there are several options for lodging. Cano Villa inn offers 12 spacious units with kitchen for 4-6, large terrace with tasca andalusia PA (only for guests) and sea view (which is 50 m). Umbrellas and chairs are provided for use at the beach.
The Ventolera, on the beach, is an attractive rustic style house. On the left there is a social area (with pool table), but open to an indoor garden center. On one side of this area is one quarter to three, the other, the kitchen, bar and bathroom. In the garden there is another form of two floors, with living room, kitchen, bathroom next door, with one fourth and one with M & S. M In the high floor is the main room with M and balcony overlooking the beach, huge bathroom with tub, also with sea view. Meals on request, linen on request.
La Posada de Carlos, at the end of Calle Real, is modest, at the beach, with eight rooms (three with AA) with bath, the right to cook. Despite being disabled, must be in a wheelchair, always wearing a smile that reflects his positive attitude and has assembled the inn to be self-sufficient.
In channels, next to Las Olas Resort, the Sun Vista Residence, Marianne Sonntag rented two penthouse apartments in the first 6 to 250 m2. The second of 305 m2 to 8. Both with ocean views, beautifully decorated, well-equipped kitchen, large terrace. Guests have the use of the pool, Jacuzzi, game room complex plus access to The Golf Channel Club.
Continuing on this path, will reach the beautiful beach Casting also has a restaurant. From the road via the East, 31 km east of El Guapo is Machurucuto exit.
Two lodging options. Are simple, but handled by people with great enthusiasm, working with the community to improve tourism in the village. Aremar The inn has three rooms and apartments with 2-3 kitchen, terrace with a pool table, back door giving access to the beach. Next door is Old Inn Boca which has five apartments for 6-7 with kitchen gardens, caney overlooking the beach.
