Mérida: Mérida State Capital City. It was founded on October 9, 1558 by Spanish Captain Juan Rodríguez Suárez, under the name "City of Santiago de los Caballeros de Mérida". It is located in a vast plateau to 1625 m above sea level, at the foot of the Andes. The geographical position of the city, with a ring of mountains, part of the Sierra Nevada, Merida makes a place uniquely equipped for mountain tourism.
The site today is the city belonged to the oldest indigenous civilization of the state, Tatuy, the indigenous name that also designates the plateau which means "older".
