Rio Caura and jump to Bolivar

rio_caure The Caura River is the third largest river in Venezuela with a 723 km long and is one of the main tributaries of the Orinoco (the largest river in Venezuela and the third in the world). The Caura watershed is protected by the largest forest reserve in the country, which has an area of 5,000,000 hectares. The forests that cover this entire area are in their original form, have not been tapped primary forest. One of the main attractions of this river is the "Jump To", a spectacular waterfall for which the river rushes for seven gullies. This jump in winter or rainy season flow exceeds the famous Victoria Falls in Africa and also to the equally famous Iguazu Falls on the border of Brazil and Argentina. This is the area of indigenous or ethnic Ye'kwana Makiritare.
The Caura River region has maintained its original character so far, since only a few tourists visit this beautiful place. An inn, located directly opposite the river, in the heart of tropical rainforest, is the starting point of a journey in which the adventure, fun and spectacle of the scenery go hand in hand.
Depart from the inn Indian canoe toward the "Jump To", an extraordinarily beautiful waterfall surrounded by virgin tropical forests. We will be accompanied by indigenous Yekwanas (Makiritare), with whom we learn much about their customs, their beliefs and peculiarities of the jungle.
In the Caura inn visitors can choose between hammocks and double bedrooms with private bathrooms. During our three-day trip to the falls sleep in hammocks under mosquito nets.

Discover the Rio Caura
200 years ago, more than 2000 people were attracted to the huge jungle of the Caura River region by the operation of a fruit called "Sarapia" that grows there. The Sarapia is a kind of nut, very valuable for the pharmaceutical and perfume, because of the oil it produces.

Huge granite boulders prevented the boats of yore, propelled by paddle wheels, piercing through the virgin forest across the Rio Caura. When the rocks ended up permanently block the passage for these vessels, Sarapia seekers were established. The natural shape of the rocks in that place reminded trenches, the name by which the settlement now known where the Posada.

The Caura River has long been the only connection with civilization, but today there is also a partially paved road that leads through dense jungles, to "The Trenches". Oil exploration led to a large number of trinchereños march to the city, so at present, the number of residents is estimated at between 80 and 100. Today the inhabitants of "The Trench" living from fishing, their conucos (small fields obtained from controlled burning of land) or from our inn.
With the help of residents, offer a tour through the jungle to "Jump To", using as a transport a canoe on the Rio Caura Indian. If accompanies us luck, we will be escorted by river dolphins (porpoises), sea turtles, otters and countless birds including herons, kingfishers, rare "hoatzin" and, of course, parrots and macaws.

Our small, cozy inn is located on the outskirts of town, directly on the banks of the Rio Caura. One of the attractions of the inn is the terrace, which has an interesting view of a rocky landscape. This space is the center of almost any event that takes place at the Inn, including breakfast, dinner or if you prefer, the most pure relaxation. The fishing, the enjoyment of the river or kayak exploration are just some possibilities to spend a day in contact with nature. Additionally, we offer day trips to an island of granite in the Caura River, the "Cascade Leone" in the mountains of Maigualida and observation of animals in the Caño Mato.

La Posada del Caura has a colonial-style house, run by our hosts. This invites us to share a large kitchen, living room and two bathrooms. The cook will delight our guests with delicious and exotic dishes. We slept in hammocks, lulled by the sounds of virgin forest, low native huts with thatched roofs. Guests who prefer more comfort, they can spend the night in double rooms with private bathroom.
